365 DotU, Day 47 Brings The Metacover Action AGAIN!

Johnny Cash’s cover of NiN’s “Hurt” is one of my favorite examples of a) someone really taking ownership of a cover instead of just copying the original, and b) a cover I actually like a lot more than the original (although, to be perfectly clear, I think both versions are quite amazing). There’s something raw and real and immediately present about Cash’s approach to the song that just turns it into a real emotional punch in the sternum.

So, of course, I sucked when I did it, mostly because I am a better singer than I am a guitarist (which isn’t saying much, really, because I’m a rather awful guitar player, to be honest). Still, I had to try, and I’m glad I learned it.

While I did record some better sound, for some reason I decided to leave the video sound (through the Mackie) alone on this one. It wasn’t as tidy as the mixed version, but it was a bit more present, I think.

About L. M. Bernhardt

For a good long while (15 years or so), I taught philosophy at a little private university in northwest IA, and occasionally branched out into playing music, dabbling in photography, experimenting with food, and writing nonsense on my blog. The philosophy teaching part ended in 2017 (program elimination via prioritization), but never fear! I've just finished my MLIS at San Jose State University, and I'm currently on the market looking for new adventures in either philosophy or LIS. For now, I labor at a fairly interesting administrative job in order to support my dogs in the lavish manner to which they've become accustomed.
